Biographer Laura Sewell Matter and organist Christa Rakich will present a program entitled “Hell and Reason” at Boston’s Old West Church on Sunday, May 21, at 2:30 pm. Charles Fisk was a renowned builder of pipe organs who died in 1983. As a teenager, he also worked as a technician on the Manhattan Project, unknowingly helping to create the world’s first nuclear weapons. Matter will read from an essay that examines Fisk’s early work building bombs and his later transition to building organs. Rakich will perform music by J.S. Bach and Nicolas de Grigny on Fisk Op. 55, one of the builder’s most beloved and influential instruments.
Matter’s essay, also titled “Hell and Reason” was published in our Spring 2017 issue.
