Sam Pickering grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. Although he spent sixty-seven years in classrooms, beginning with kindergarten, he has been a wanderer and a rum-mager living in the Middle East, Britain, and Australia, and he has explored libraries and fields and woods alike, writing thirty books, most of which are collections of personal essays.
