Percolations of the Void

Ian Boyden received a BA in art history and East Asian studies from Wesleyan University in 1995 and an MA in art history from Yale University in 1998—the same year he started Crab Quill Press, through which he produces handmade books and broadsides. He was director of the Sheehan Gallery at Whitman College in Walla Walla from 1998 to 2007 but since then has been a self-employed artist. His paintings have been shown widely in the United States and Asia: at recent solo exhibitions at the Augen Gallery in Portland and Davidson Galleries in Seattle, and in group exhibitions at the Portland Art Museum and the Seoul Museum of Art, among many others. His handmade books are in numerous corporate and public collections, including the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution; the New York Public Library; and Beijing University.

Patrick Lohier’s fiction, profiles, and reviews have appeared in Callaloo, African American Review, the Common Review, the Globe and Mail, and other publications. He lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Stranger (Spring 2007)

Thomas Allen’s photographs have appeared in numerous magazines (including Harper’s) and on the covers of three James Ellroy novels, as well as in Uncovered: Photographs by Thomas Allen (Aperture, 2007). His work has been exhibited at the Foley Gallery in New York and Thomas Barry Fine Arts in Minneapolis, among many other galleries. He has a BFA from Wayne State University and an MFA from the University of Minnesota.

Miss Birdie (Winter 1999)

Kathleen Holmes’s work has been exhibited nationwide in such venues as the Chappell Gallery in New York and Pacini Lubel Gallery in Seattle, and she has pieces in numerous corporate and civic collections. She has won support from several arts organizations and foundations, including a 2006 Florida Individual Artist Fellowship.

Draw 5 Girls (Winter 2001/Spring 2002)

Melissa Harshman makes prints from eclectic sources, such as old cookbooks, dictionaries, and other printed ephemera. Her images have been featured in solo shows throughout the Southeast and elsewhere, including at Sandler Hudson Gallery in Atlanta. Holding a BFA from Cornell University and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin, Harshman is associate professor of art and chair of the printmaking department at the University of Georgia.

The American Print (Spring 2003)

Carol Mickett’s career has encompassed not only collaborative work with Robert Stackhouse but also success as a freelance producer, director, and writer. She has won numerous grants, and her writing has appeared in Prairie Schooner, New Letters, and elsewhere. Mickett has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Minnesota.

Robert Stackhouse, who collaborated with Carol Mickett on The American Print in this issue, is best known for his large-scale architectural sculpture and paintings. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Australia, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the Art Institute of Chicago, and many others. Professor emeritus at the Corcoran School of Art, Stackhouse has been the recipient of three NEA grants.

Self-Portrait/The Doctor Made Me Do It (Winter 1996)

Mark D. Sisson’s prints and drawings, shown nationally and internationally, are in numerous public and private collections—including the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the Fogg Museum of Harvard University, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum in Kansas City. With a BFA from the University of Michigan and an MFA from the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Sisson is professor of art at Oklahoma State University.

Day Six: Shields Ablaze (Winter 2000)

Ellen Frank is an award-winning painter, writer, and scholar of both literature and art. Her illuminated manuscripts have appeared in numerous exhibitions in the United States and internationally, and her Hanukkah Illuminated, A Book of Days series (1997–2000) will be published in book form by Welcome Press. She has a master’s degree in literature and a PhD in literature and visual arts from Stanford University.

Tenerife, August 1672 (Avis Habilis) (Summer 2001)

Cristina Vergano comes from an artistic Italian family and is self-trained. She has had numerous solo exhibitions, most recently at the Woodward Gallery in New York. Her work has been featured in Art in America, Esquire, and the New York Times, among other periodicals.
