In Memoriam, W. S. Merwin

               —30 September 1927–15 March 2019—

poet, translator, and conservationist par excellence.

Cloud in the morning

evening a white opal

after a white sun

the lighted opal sits on the rim

of dark mountains

some are born hearing dogs bark in the mountains

among high walls just after sunset

and all their lives things are known to them

that are not known even to those born hearing water

or trees or sobbing or flutes or laughing
