As You Can Tell

Stanley Plumly with former students Courtney Dillon (left) and Katherine DeBlassie Page.

As you can tell
I love the sky

A bird flies in
A bird flies out

a red-bellied hawk
crosses into space I eventually
can’t see or follow—

that’s the point

becoming a dot in the blue-open
until the dot is the whole sky

brushing itself orange and red
brushing itself streaked white clouds
spread like a body reclining

limbs resting as a head tilts up

Can you count all the stars? it says
Even the one that made us?

End it with a heart
End it with it opening
End it with it closing

red feathered

It flew in
It flew out

The sky seemed like apparatus
but it was all of it
